We all came out to Montreux

On the Lake Geneva shoreline

To make records with a mobile

We didn`t have much time

모바일 앨범을 만들기 위한
시간은 그리 많지는 않았어


Frank Zappa and the Mothers

Were at the best place round

But some stupid with a flare gun

Burned the place to the ground

 

프랭크 자파와 마더스는
좋은 기회를 잡았지
그렇지만 어떤 멍청이가 폭죽을 터트려
그곳을 완전히 불태워 버렸지,,,

물 위엔 연기가, 불길은 하늘로 치솟고
물 위엔 연기가


They burned down the gambling house

It died with an awful sound

Funky and Claude was running in and out

Pulling kids out the ground

 

불이 도박장을 태워 버렸어
엄청난 소리를 내면서 무너졌지
Funky 와 Claude는 들락날락거리면서
아이들을 밖으로 끌어냈지


When it all was over

We had to find another place

But Swiss time was running out

It seemed that we would lose the race

 

모든 것이 다 끝났을때
우린 다른 장소를 찾아야 했어
하지만 스위스 시간은 다됐고
우리가 내기에서 진 것처럼 보였지

We ended up at the Grand Hotel

It was empty cold and bare
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside

Making our music there

 

우린 그랜드 호텔까지 오게 됐지,

거긴 비어 있었고 춥고 낡아 빠졌었어
하지만 밖에 있는 Rolling truck Stones에서
우리의 음악을 만들었어


With a few red lights and a few old beds

We make a place to sweat

No matter what we get out of this

I know, I know we`ll never forget

 

몇개의 붉은 조명과 낡은 침대들 밖에 없었지만
우리는 열심히 노력해야 했어
우리가 이걸 빠져 나가는 것과 상관없이
난 알아, 우린 절대로 잊지 않을 거란걸

물 위엔 연기가, 불길은 하늘로 치솟고
물 위엔 연기가

 

 

Deep Purple의 Smoke on the water는..
호숫가에서 커다란 화재가 일어나 건물들이 불타 무너지고
그 연기가 수면에 쫘악 깔리는 상황을 묘사한 것으로,
음반 작업을 하기위해 스위스 제네바 몽트뢰에 갔던
Deep Purple 멤버들은
우연찮에 커다란 화재를 만나고
거기서 영감을 받아 곡을 쓴게
Smoke on the water 라고 한다.
말하자면, "물위에는 연기가..." 정도 될까?..
당시 보컬인 이언 길런이 그장면을 보면서
가사를 메모하는 순발력을 발휘하여

팝 역사상 가장 위대한 명곡 중의 하나를 탄생시켰다고 한다.
