벨라 차오(Bella ciao)는 제2차 세계 대전 당시

이탈리아의 파시즘과 독일의 나치즘에 저항하던 파르티잔들의 노래로써

이탈리아 북부 포(Po)지방에서 구전되어 내려오던 전통 민요에 가사를 붙여서,

내일이면 죽음의 전장으로 길 떠나는 파르티잔 청년이

사랑하는 연인을 생각하며 불렀다는데

사실, Bella ciao는 "아리랑 아리랑 아라리오~"처럼

전통민요에서 흔히 볼 수 있는

별다른 뜻없이 반복되는 후렴구처럼 쓰였다고 한다.

이 곡은 스페인 내전 땐 의용군들이 부르기도 했으며

세계 어느 곳에서든 독재에 항거하는 모든 민중들이 널리 부르게 되었다.
